Mid-Year: What You Need to Know
Midyear is a relaxed showcase of all the things your child has been learning in class, from exercises and tricks to technique that builds the foundation of their class. This is a glimpse into the in-class skills we work on each week, giving insight into what end-of-year performances can potentially look like.
Unlike a big stage production, Midyear is designed to feel comfortable, supportive, and exciting for our dancers. It’s a chance for families to see progress, growth, confidence, and all the little wins your child has achieved so far this year.
Why Midyear Is So Important
Midyear is more than just showing routines — it’s about celebrating development.
Throughout the year, dancers spend countless hours:
Learning technique and coordination
Building confidence
Practicing discipline and teamwork
Developing musicality and performance skills
Creating friendships and classroom confidence
Midyear allows them to proudly share those achievements with the people they love most.
For many younger dancers especially, this may be their very first experience performing in front of family and friends. Keeping the environment relaxed helps build positive memories and confidence for future performances.
How to Get Your Child Ready for Midyear
1. Talk About It Positively
Children feed off the energy around them. The more calm and excited you are, the more confident they will feel.
Instead of:
“Are you nervous?”
Try:
“I can’t wait to see everything you’ve been learning!”
“It’s going to be so fun watching you dance.”
2. Keep Routines Consistent
In the lead-up to Midyear:
Make sure your child gets plenty of sleep
Pack water and snacks for classes
Attend classes consistently so they feel prepared and confident
Confidence comes from familiarity and practice.
3. Practice at Home (Without Pressure)
If your child wants to show you dances or tricks at home — encourage it!
Celebrate effort rather than perfection:
“Wow, you remembered that!”
“You look so strong doing that move!”
“I love watching you dance.”
Avoid over-correcting or putting pressure on getting things “perfect.”
4. Be Organised Early
Nothing creates stress like a last-minute rush.
Prepare:
Uniforms and shoes
Hair accessories
Any costume pieces needed
Water bottle and snacks
Having everything ready ahead of time helps the day feel smooth and exciting.
5. Remind Them What Matters Most
Midyear isn’t about being perfect.
It’s about:
Trying their best
Having fun
Showing growth
Feeling proud of themselves
A smile and confidence are far more important than perfect choreography.
How to Hype Up Midyear for Your Child
Make It Feel Special
Build excitement in the days leading up to it:
Count down the sleeps
Mark it on the calendar
Let them tell grandparents or friends about it
Celebrate afterward with a special treat or family dinner
Focus on the “Showcase” Aspect
Explain that Midyear is like inviting family into the classroom to see all the cool things they’ve been learning.
This helps take away pressure and makes it feel fun and achievable.
Let Them Be the Star
Kids LOVE feeling proud of what they can do.
Say things like:
“You’ve worked so hard for this.”
“I’m so excited to watch you.”
“You get to show everyone your tricks and dances!”
Celebrate the Journey
Remind them how far they’ve already come this year:
Better listening skills
More confidence
New friendships
New tricks and technique
Sometimes children don’t realise how much they’ve improved until someone points it out.
A Final Reminder for Parents
Every child experiences performance moments differently. Some will run on stage confidently, while others may feel shy or emotional — and that is completely normal.
Midyear is about creating a positive experience that helps dancers grow both inside and outside the studio.
Cheer loudly, smile proudly, and enjoy watching your child do something they love. Those moments of confidence, excitement, and joy are what Midyear is all about.
